THE SHORT ANSWER

Auto subs are processed after the Gameweek. Bench priority and formation decide who can replace an absent starter—not which substitute scored most.

Check these first

  1. Has the whole Gameweek finished?

A finished match is not a finished Gameweek. Allow time for processing; this guide does not promise a fixed update time.

  2. Did your starter participate?

Even a brief appearance prevents an auto sub. The rules also count a yellow or red card as participation. Zero points does not mean the player was absent.

  3. Is your bench player eligible?

They must have participated. Outfield bench order matters; goalkeepers only replace goalkeepers.

Why was my first substitute skipped?

Example: you start three defenders and one is absent. Your first substitute is a midfielder; your second is a defender. If both substitutes played, the defender comes on to preserve the minimum of three defenders.

What about a Double Gameweek?

Check every match in that Gameweek. Missing the first match is not enough if the starter participates in the second.
