Is Palmer Suspended for GW9? Ban Served, FPL Status Explained
Palmer has served his cup suspension and is eligible for GW9. Hold if the red card was your reason to sell; a new purchase still depends on your squad and Chelsea’s team news.

Do not sell Cole Palmer because you think his red card rules him out of Gameweek 9. It does not. The Premier League’s 29 October update confirms that he has served his one-match suspension against Liverpool in the EFL Cup. He will not miss a Premier League match because of that red card. Official suspension update
Our FPL verdict is hold for existing owners; watch rather than rush for non-owners. Eligibility removes the immediate reason to sell, but it does not make Palmer an automatic purchase.

What happened against Tottenham?
The official FPL record gives Palmer 79 minutes and minus one point in Gameweek 8. He is currently £9.8m, has started all eight league matches and is marked available in the player feed. The match report's 80th-minute dismissal and FPL's recorded 79 minutes are different presentation conventions; use the FPL figure when discussing fantasy minutes. Palmer started Chelsea's 2-0 defeat and was dismissed in the 80th minute after receiving two yellow cards. Chelsea's official report records his first booking in the 71st minute. This was a sending-off for two bookable offences, rather than a straight red. Chelsea match report
That distinction matters, but the next fixture matters too. The Premier League says red-card suspensions carry across the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup. Yellow-card accumulation bans operate differently: a five-booking Premier League suspension is served in that competition. For Palmer, the league has explicitly confirmed that Wednesday’s Liverpool cup tie accounted for his automatic one-match ban, which is now served. Premier League disciplinary explanation
Who do Chelsea play next in the league?
Chelsea host Manchester United on 31 October, visit Sunderland on 8 November and host Leeds on 21 November in the current FPL fixture feed. Official FPL fixtures
The useful consequence is that owners can assess an actual run of league matches. They do not have to reserve a bench place for a suspension that will not affect those matches.
Hold, buy or sell?
Already own Palmer: hold unless your wider plan says otherwise
A poor return cannot be recovered by immediately selling the player who delivered it. The relevant comparison is Palmer's next run against what a replacement offers, including the transfer cost and any other moves you need.
If your squad has an injured starter or a player who has genuinely lost his place, we would normally address that problem before spending a transfer on an eligible Palmer. Taking a points hit solely to remove the red-card symbol from your thinking is particularly difficult to justify.
There can still be a sensible sale. You may need his budget to repair multiple positions, or have a stronger multiweek plan. Make that case explicitly. The suspension itself is not the case.
Do not own Palmer: watch the Chelsea attack before buying
João Pedro remains unavailable. Chelsea’s 27 October update described an absence of a few weeks, without a fixed return date. That changes the attacking context around Palmer without establishing who will start alongside him. Chelsea’s Pedro update
For an optional purchase, weigh Chelsea’s latest team news and your existing midfield before spending a transfer. Palmer being eligible is useful information, not proof that Chelsea's attack has no concerns.
What could change this verdict?
- A new fitness issue or further disciplinary announcement.
- Clear pre-match information that changes his expected involvement.
- A confirmed alternative whose role, fixtures and price improve your squad over several weeks.
Bottom line: Palmer is available from a suspension standpoint for Gameweek 9. Hold if the red card was your only reason to sell; evaluate a purchase on football and squad structure, not on the relief that he avoids a league ban.
