Keep Erling Haaland for now while waiting for Manchester City's next team update. The official reports reviewed here describe a plan to manage his Norway minutes and do not establish an injury. FPL also lists him as available at our latest check.

The more immediate question may be captaincy. You can keep Haaland without giving him the armband, and City's Sunday match means you must make that decision before their starting XI is announced. Here is how we would separate the transfer, starting-lineup and captaincy calls for GW6.

Looking ahead to GW7? Read our Triple Captain assessment. The analysis below reflects the GW6 information available at the time.

What the official reports confirm

Manchester City's 4 October match roundup records Haaland being replaced in the 67th minute of Norway's defeat to Portugal. It gives no injury diagnosis.

The Premier League's 5 October report adds the relevant context. Norway coach Stale Solbakken said they had considered a little over 60 minutes for Haaland, with an agreement that he would continue while he could contribute. He had completed 90 minutes in each of Norway's previous three matches during the break.

Those comments support a workload-management explanation. That is our interpretation of the coach's account, rather than confirmation of his fitness or expected minutes against Liverpool. The substitution alone is insufficient evidence for an injury-driven sale.

At 01:37 UTC on 6 October, the official FPL player feed listed Haaland as available with an empty injury-news field. That is the game's status at the check time; it does not guarantee a start or 90 minutes.

The deadline comes before City's Sunday lineup

The official GW6 deadline is Saturday 10 October at 10:00 UTC / 11:00 BST. City's trip to Liverpool is scheduled for Sunday 11 October at 15:30 UTC / 16:30 BST.

You therefore cannot wait for City's confirmed starting XI before setting your GW6 team. Use the club's pre-match update and the latest FPL status, then choose your starter and captain before Saturday's deadline. A Sunday announcement will be too late to change either.

Holding him leaves the captaincy decision open

If City gives reassuring news and no specific warning about reduced minutes, assess Haaland normally alongside your other captain options. This availability update does not establish that he is the best GW6 captain: the alternatives' fitness, fixture and expected role still matter.

If credible news instead points to restricted minutes, holding him can remain sensible while captaining someone with a stronger expected starting role. For your XI, compare his likely involvement with the cover you already own. If you prefer the substitute's prospects, you can start that player without selling Haaland.

A vice-captain takes over only if your captain plays no minutes. If Haaland comes on late, the armband stays with him. A dependable vice-captain covers a complete absence, so choose the captain you actually want under the minutes information available. Official captaincy rules

Check which problem your bench can solve

Put your strongest eligible substitute first if you start Haaland. Automatic substitutions must keep a legal formation, including at least three defenders and one forward. A midfielder cannot replace your only starting forward, and a brief appearance prevents an automatic replacement. Official substitution rules

If you also own João Pedro or Alexander Isak, review the whole XI before spending a transfer. Our João Pedro and Isak GW6 guide covers the dual-forward problem and replacement shortlist. Check the dates on its player data before using those options.

What would justify selling

A confirmed absence over several matches would make a sale more compelling. For a single missed Gameweek, compare the replacement with your available cover and include the cost of bringing Haaland back.

Check your actual selling proceeds and the return purchase price with the FPL Selling Price Calculator. If you need a paid transfer, the replacement must improve your team enough to repay the four-point deduction over your planned holding period. A later return move can add another cost. The FPL Transfer Hit Calculator can help compare two players' model estimates. Check your bench cover separately, and include every paid move in the plan.

For now, our default remains to hold Haaland and reassess captaincy when City's next update arrives. Make the final call before Saturday's deadline. This substitution alone gives too little reason to use a Wildcard or Free Hit.
