Update — 24 October 2026: BBC reports that Saka could be sidelined for around six to eight weeks, although his final recovery timeline has not been confirmed. Further scans and specialist advice are still needed. BBC report, 23 October
The GW8 deadline has passed (23 October, 17:30 UTC / 18:30 BST). This update is for decisions after that deadline; transfers made now cannot change your GW8 team. Prioritise assessing replacements for the coming gameweeks, without assuming a fixed return gameweek.
This is a historical pre-deadline GW8 preview. The original captain, transfer and deadline sections below are retained for context; only the Saka news and related advice have been updated.
Our original pre-deadline GW8 plan was: captain Erling Haaland, prioritise replacing Antoine Semenyo, and wait for clearer Bukayo Saka news if your bench allowed it. The Saka advice has since changed with the report above; the remainder of this preview preserves its pre-deadline context. For managers without Haaland, Bryan Mbeumo and Cole Palmer offer home-fixture alternatives. Avoid spending a transfer simply to chase last week's highest score.
This preview helps you choose the armband, separate urgent transfers from optional upgrades, and organise your bench after the European fixtures.
Deadline: Friday 23 October, 18:30 BST — Saturday 24 October, 01:30 in Beijing and Singapore (UTC+8). Set your team before then, not on Saturday evening. Official FPL deadline

Purchase prices and league totals through GW7: official FPL player data.
Our default: Haaland
Haaland remains our preferred captain. He has eight league goals through seven gameweeks and returned 13 points in GW7. More importantly for this decision, Enzo Maresca has said he is fully available for Villa after remaining an unused substitute against AEK Athens. FPL data, Manchester City team news
Villa away is not a guaranteed haul. Our preference rests on his established league role and the positive availability update, rather than assuming last week's two goals will repeat. An unused midweek substitute appearance supports the workload case; it does not promise 90 minutes.
Without Haaland: Mbeumo or Palmer
Mbeumo is our first alternative from this shortlist. Bournemouth at home combines with the strongest league-minutes record here: all 630 available minutes. That gives a clearer starting-point for captaincy than trying to predict which City midfielder will play.
Palmer is another reasonable option at home to Tottenham, having started all seven league matches. His two-point GW7 should not, by itself, push owners towards a transfer or a different captain. Both alternatives remain subject to the final team news. Official FPL player data
Isak belongs in the discussion against Brighton, but we would want stronger reassurance about his minutes before preferring him to those options. His current FPL status is available, with a 100% next-round availability label; that is not a forecast of a full match. Saka, currently flagged, is not our default captain at this snapshot. Liverpool’s pre-Brighton press conference is scheduled for 13:30 BST today and had not taken place at our check. Liverpool notice
Injury and rotation decisions that matter
Semenyo: deal with the longer absence first
Semenyo is marked injured in FPL with a knee problem and an unknown return date. City's estimate is around eight weeks out. That makes replacing him a higher priority than switching between fit players because of a single result. The estimate is not a confirmed comeback date. Official FPL status, Manchester City injury update
Phil Foden at £6.8m and Pedro Neto at £6.5m offer different replacement routes. We cover the trade-offs in our Foden, Cherki and Semenyo replacement guide. Neither should be bought on the assumption that one strong performance guarantees the next start.
Saka: assess replacements after the longer-absence report
At this preview’s original morning check on 23 October, Saka was £9.6m with a thigh-injury flag and a 50% chance-of-playing label. The Premier League’s GW8 radar described him as a weekend doubt after the Bayern match. Those were the pre-deadline signals, not a confirmed recovery timeline. Update, 24 October: BBC reports that Saka could be sidelined for around six to eight weeks, although his final recovery timeline has not been confirmed. Further scans and specialist advice are still needed. BBC report, 23 October
With GW8 already locked, prioritise assessing replacements for subsequent gameweeks rather than treating Saka as a one-week bench-cover problem. Bench depth, free transfers, budget and expected minutes should determine the move. Do not assume a fixed return gameweek from the reported range.
Use our updated Saka hold-or-sell guide for the detailed comparison. At this preview’s original 23 October check, Palmer was £9.8m and Mbeumo £7.9m; check current prices before making a later transfer.
City midfield: attacking potential still comes with selection risk
Foden has 293 league minutes and Rayan Cherki 392. Cherki played no league minutes in GW7. Those records matter more than treating a European goal as a promise of a weekend start. Foden's absence also included a three-match suspension, so his total should not all be attributed to rotation. Official FPL data, City on Foden's return
Foden delivered a hat-trick and an assist, while Cherki also scored against AEK. Both started, with neither listed among City’s substitutions. City made eight changes for that match: the European XI is useful workload evidence, not a weekend lineup forecast. City match report
Semenyo's absence does not establish who gets the minutes. Nor should owners assume City's other doubts have cleared: Maresca said Nico O'Reilly, Mateo Kovačić and Matheus Nunes needed assessment after training. City team news
Chelsea have no midweek European match to recover from before Spurs. Their Friday press conference still needs checking. Chelsea’s weekly schedule
Buy, hold or save the transfer?
Buy for a specific need. If replacing an injured midfielder, Mbeumo offers the clearest league-minutes case in this shortlist. Palmer preserves a premium midfield slot. Foden and Neto release more money, but the saving should have a purpose beyond making the transfer look cheaper.
Hold fit players unless the wider move improves your squad. Cherki to Foden can make sense when the £1.2m purchase-price difference enables another upgrade; it is not compulsory. Similarly, João Pedro owners should not treat his GW7 blank and Isak's goal as enough evidence for an immediate switch.
Gabriel is a start, not an automatic new purchase. Gabriel has played every league minute and faces Everton at home, so he belongs in the starting XI if you own him. But at £7.9m, a new purchase deserves a multi-week view: Arsenal visit Liverpool in GW9 before hosting Hull in GW10. Official FPL prices and minutes, fixtures
Saving a transfer is a valid outcome. If you have a credible XI, a captain you trust and no long-term absence to address, you do not need to manufacture a GW8 move.
Your final GW8 checklist
- Recheck official injury updates, especially Saka and any player your plan depends on.
- Confirm both captain and vice-captain. Avoid placing both roles on unresolved availability doubts.
- Put your most useful available substitute first; remember that cameos can block an automatic substitution.
- Check your actual selling prices and funds in FPL, not just the purchase prices quoted here.
- Use our FPL price-change tracker to monitor risk, not as confirmation that a rise or fall will happen.
- Save your team before Friday 18:30 BST / Saturday 01:30 UTC+8.
Original GW8 verdict: Haaland captain, Semenyo replacement first, and a news-led decision on Saka. GW8 is now locked. The later BBC report makes assessing a Saka replacement a priority for subsequent gameweeks, with no fixed comeback date assumed.
