Should you sell João Pedro before FPL Gameweek 9? For most owners with a free transfer, yes: Xabi Alonso expects him to miss several weeks. Nicolas Jackson is the budget-conscious replacement to assess first; Alexander Isak is the upgrade if you can afford him without weakening another position.
Owners with a stronger priority elsewhere can still bench him temporarily, particularly if selling would require a marginal points hit. The aim should be to manage the transfer cost while planning for his absence.
2026/27 season. Checked 28 October 2026 at 02:35 UTC; FPL data snapshot 01:57–01:58 UTC. GW9 deadline: Saturday 31 October, 11:00 GMT / 19:00 Singapore. Prices and availability can change before the deadline.
What is confirmed about Pedro’s injury?
João Pedro missed the Tottenham match after a training injury, as Chelsea’s match report confirmed. In Chelsea’s subsequent team-news update, Alonso said the thigh injury would keep him out for “a few weeks”, without specifying the precise duration. His comments were also covered on 27 October by Reuters, via CNA; BBC Sport’s news-conference summary corroborates them.
The official FPL listing still says “Thigh injury - Unknown return date”. That remains consistent with Alonso’s update: the absence is expected to last weeks, but the return date is still unknown.
Plan your GW9 XI without Pedro. Until Chelsea give a clearer timetable, the useful decisions concern his replacement and the timing of the transfer.
Jackson saves money; Isak requires an upgrade

When does a temporary hold still make sense?
If a fit substitute gives you a credible XI and another absence is more damaging, you can postpone Pedro’s sale. Open My team and identify who actually takes his place. Check that your formation works and that another doubtful starter will not exhaust your cover. Our GW9 injury update separates confirmed absences from players who may yet be available.
With a free transfer and no more urgent repair, moving the money into an available forward is generally preferable to parking it on the bench through a multi-week absence. With no free transfer, compare the replacement’s likely contribution against your substitute and the cost of waiting one round.
Chelsea’s appealing fixtures only become relevant again once Pedro is fit. In the meantime, holding him briefly can work as part of a planned squad restructure, provided the rest of the XI can absorb the absence.
Jackson: the cheaper route with room to improve elsewhere
Nicolas Jackson is now an Aston Villa forward. Villa’s official account of the Manchester City win confirms his two goals. The two-goal return brings him into focus, though the purchase needs to make sense beyond one excellent afternoon.
Jackson suits an owner who needs a forward but also has an expensive problem elsewhere. The key question is what the lower price enables: a stronger starting midfielder, better defensive cover, or money retained for the next decision.
Fulham at home followed by Manchester United away and Sunderland at home provides a three-round case to examine. Check Villa’s latest team news and any intervening cup workload before committing.
For managers who need to repair more than one position, Jackson is our preferred starting point, provided the latest team news supports his role.
Isak suits a longer-term plan
Alexander Isak suits a different squad. He deserves consideration if you already have the funds and want the Liverpool forward for more than one round. Arsenal come first, however, which makes the immediate fixture a less compelling part of the argument.
The displayed price gap from Pedro is £1.3m. Your actual top-up can be larger because Pedro’s selling value may be below his current £7.8m market price. Likewise, buying Jackson does not automatically leave you with exactly £1.0m extra.
Use the selling-price calculator with your purchase price before building either plan. If reaching Isak requires another downgrade or a points hit, compare the whole change, not just the two forwards.
Is a hit justified?
Start with the player who would replace Pedro in your XI if you did nothing. A serviceable substitute makes the immediate gain from a transfer smaller than comparing a new forward with zero.
The transfer-hit calculator can compare the same-position move and its estimated net points. Its model does not optimise your starting XI, bench or captain, so use it as a sense-check rather than a decision-maker. Check affordability and your other squad constraints separately.
Follow FPL price changes if your budget is tight. Leave room for the latest team news when weighing an early purchase, rather than allowing a possible price change to dictate the decision.
Which route fits your squad?
- Free transfer and no more urgent repair: replace Pedro; plan without him for GW9.
- Usable bench, another priority or a marginal hit: a temporary hold can preserve transfer efficiency.
- No credible cover, limited budget: assess Jackson first, subject to Villa news.
- Funds available without another compromise: assess Isak as a longer-term upgrade.
- Either route requires a hit: compare against your actual substitute, then reassess the full XI.
Alonso’s update makes a sale the sensible starting point. Choose the replacement who improves the next few rounds without leaving a more expensive problem elsewhere.
