Calafiori to Konsa? Arsenal FPL Defenders for GW9
Konsa offers a £4.7m route into Arsenal's defence. Judge the saving and expected minutes, not last weekend's goal.

Ezri Konsa is an attractive budget route into Arsenal's defence, but we would not take a hit simply to chase his goal against Everton. At £4.7m, he deserves consideration when you need a defender or want to release money elsewhere. A sideways move from an otherwise usable Arsenal defender needs a stronger reason.
That is the distinction for Gameweek 9: hold if you own him; consider a planned purchase if you need the budget; wait if your only motivation is the previous result.

| Gabriel | £7.9m | 8 | 90 | 17 |

| Calafiori | £6.0m | 7 | 22 | 1 |
FPL data rechecked on 26 October 2026 at 15:25 UTC: all ten GW8 matches are complete, and the event is now marked finished and data-checked. GW8 points are confirmed final scores. Prices and season starts: official player feed; minutes and points: official GW8 data.
Gabriel has the strongest starting record of these three, at a much higher price. Konsa's six starts show that he is more than a one-match punt, but do not guarantee the next selection. Calafiori's seven starts also matter: one substitute appearance is not proof that he has permanently lost his place.
The current purchase-price difference between Calafiori and Konsa is £1.3m. That is not necessarily the cash you would release: check Calafiori's actual selling value in your squad before planning a second transfer.
What has changed?
Official FPL Gameweek 8 data records 90 minutes and 14 points for Konsa, against 22 substitute minutes and one point for Calafiori. The current FPL player feed lists Calafiori with a hip injury and a 75 per cent chance of playing; Konsa is available. A 75 per cent flag is a game status, not a promise of recovery or a medical assessment of how serious the injury is. Official GW8 data · Official player data
Konsa scored the opening goal in Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton. Gabriel added the second. Everton's official report confirms both goals and the clean sheet, so this is a current Arsenal assessment, not an old Aston Villa recommendation. Official match report
The FPL price update on 26 October lists Konsa at £4.7m following a rise. It also records 125,572 transfers in for Gameweek 9 at 09:05 GMT, while Calafiori had 162,105 transfers out. That demonstrates an active decision among managers. It does not establish that those transfers are optimal, or tell us how many are direct Calafiori-to-Konsa moves. The case for buying: price and what the saving enables
The useful part of the Konsa argument existed before the Everton goal. The Premier League's Scout highlighted him as a low-cost Arsenal defensive option ahead of Gameweek 6. The Scout's GW6 assessment
For your squad, the question is what the lower price actually buys. A saving that turns a non-playing bench slot into a usable player, or funds a meaningful attacking upgrade, has a purpose. Money left unused because you reacted to a scoreline is less compelling.
Do not budget on repeated goals. A centre-back goal can transform a single Gameweek without establishing a repeatable scoring rate. His place in your squad should remain defensible when he does not score.
The fixture check: Liverpool, then Hull
Arsenal visit Liverpool on 1 November, host Hull City on 7 November and visit Newcastle on 21 November. Manchester City at home follows. The current FPL fixture feed confirms the first three dates; consult it again before the deadline for any changes. Official FPL fixtures · Arsenal's season fixture list
Our reading is that this does not demand an immediate defensive double-up. If you are happy with your existing defence, you can afford to wait for current fitness and selection information. If you genuinely need a new starter, the Liverpool fixture is one part of a longer decision rather than a reason to ignore him entirely.
Should Calafiori owners switch?
Only after separating three questions:
- Is Calafiori expected to be available? Use the latest official team news, not the transfer-out count as a diagnosis.
- Does the saving improve another starting position? If it does not, the move may be unnecessarily sideways.
- Is Konsa's expected involvement sufficiently secure? One start or one goal cannot guarantee future minutes.
We would not recommend a sale purely because one Arsenal defender scored and another did not. Nor would we describe any replacement as guaranteed to start. An injury-led switch and a price-led restructuring are valid ideas, but they need their own evidence.
The verdict
- Own Konsa: hold, subject to fresh team news.
- Need a budget defender: shortlist him, then check expected minutes and how he fits your next few fixtures.
- Considering a hit or a sideways Arsenal switch: wait unless confirmed availability problems or a concrete second upgrade justify the cost.
Buy a role and a squad improvement. You cannot buy last weekend's goal.
