Cherki remains a possible sale when your priority is dependable league minutes, but his return to City's European starting XI strengthens the case for patience. Marcus Tavernier is the cheaper replacement; Morgan Rogers has the strongest recent league minutes record of the three. With an injured starter elsewhere or a four-point hit required, holding Cherki through City's next two fixtures is defensible.
This is a selection decision. At the last FPL data check, Cherki was available with no injury news in his entry. A favourable opponent still helps only if he plays enough of the match.

What has changed since the GW9 hold advice?
Our GW9 Foden and Cherki comparison allowed existing owners to hold if their XI and bench were sound. Cherki had the stronger league-start record of the two, but neither offered certain minutes.
GW9 added a concern: Cherki came on after 55 minutes against Brighton, taking his league playing time across GW7–9 to 0, 45 and 35 minutes, with one start in that run. His six season starts therefore tell a more reassuring story than the latest three league matches. City's Brighton report
The European update changes the balance. City's official match report records Cherki starting and playing the full match at RB Leipzig on 4 November. He completed 90 minutes plus stoppage time and hit the woodwork in the 3–2 win. He should not be described as permanently relegated to substitute appearances. Neither that start nor his involvement in Europe guarantees a start at Nottingham Forest. City match report and substitutions
The sale case rests on the league minutes you need from this slot, the replacement and the transfer cost. The European recall is a reason to reassess, rather than automatically act on the earlier pattern.
Cherki, Tavernier and Rogers compared
| Midfielder | Club | Price on 6 November | League starts | GW7 / GW8 / GW9 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rayan Cherki | Man City | £7.9m | 6 of 9 | 0 / 45 / 35 |
| Marcus Tavernier | Bournemouth | £6.6m | 9 of 9 | 78 / 86 / 90 |
| Morgan Rogers | Chelsea | £8.2m | 9 of 9 | 90 / 90 / 90 |
All three were marked available in the official FPL player data at that check. These are league records, not all-competition totals or promises of the next start.
Tavernier releases money
At the snapshot prices, Tavernier cost £1.3m less than Cherki. Nine starts and 750 league minutes provide a stronger recent selection record, while Ipswich away in GW10 gives the move an immediate fixture argument.
Choose him when the saving has a purpose: repairing another starter, keeping funds for an upgrade or avoiding a second transfer. Nottingham Forest at home follows, then Fulham away and Brighton at home.
Bournemouth's European fixture is now complete: they won 3–1 at Sparta Praha on 5 November. Tavernier was a substitute and entered in the 60th minute, giving him roughly 30 regulation minutes plus stoppage time. Sky Sports' match sheet records his appearance. The refreshed official FPL feed still lists him as available with no injury note. His workload was lighter than a full match, but check Bournemouth's final league team news before buying; the availability flag is not a medical clearance or a promise of a start.
Rogers offers the stronger recent league minutes record
Rogers started Chelsea's first nine league matches and completed 90 minutes in each of GW7–9. At £8.2m in the snapshot, the market-price gap from Cherki was £0.3m. Your required cash could be greater if your selling price for Cherki is lower than his market price.
His four-round run is Sunderland away, Leeds at home, Nottingham Forest away and Crystal Palace at home. For a squad that can afford him in one move and does not need Tavernier's saving elsewhere, Rogers is our preference between those two alternatives. That judgement is based on minutes evidence and squad fit; it is not a prediction that he will certainly score more.
Do not treat a full match last weekend as clearance for this weekend. Check Chelsea's latest fitness and selection information before the deadline.
Why holding Cherki can still work
City visit Nottingham Forest in GW10 and host Fulham in GW11. Selling before those fixtures has an opportunity cost if Cherki starts, and his European recall shows he remains in contention.
A strong bench helps if he does not play at all. It cannot replace a short cameo: even a brief appearance can block your substitute. Hold because the fixtures, transfer cost and wider squad justify the risk, while accepting that bench cover does not remove it.
Compare the four-round schedule
| Midfielder | GW10 | GW11 | GW12 | GW13 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cherki | Nott'm Forest A | Fulham H | Arsenal A | Leeds H |
| Tavernier | Ipswich A | Nott'm Forest H | Fulham A | Brighton H |
| Rogers | Sunderland A | Leeds H | Nott'm Forest A | Crystal Palace H |
Schedule from the official fixture feed checked on 6 November. Arsenal away in GW12 is a reason to look beyond City's next two; a GW10 hold need not become an indefinite commitment.
Which move fits your squad?
- You need more dependable league minutes and have a free transfer: consider Tavernier or Rogers after their remaining team-news checks.
- The saving repairs another part of your XI: prefer Tavernier, using Cherki's actual selling price.
- You can fund Rogers without another sacrifice: his recent league record supports the four-round option.
- You have an injured starter elsewhere: that repair can come before selling an available Cherki.
- Selling costs four points: assess the likely gain over the planned holding period; a blank or possible price fall does not make the hit automatic.
Check the selling-price calculator, then use Team Planner to compare the resulting XI. Cherki's European return warrants a fresh assessment before committing to a sale.
