Michael Carrick is staying for Chelsea, according to Sky Sports. Bruno Fernandes’ place in the XI remains unresolved. For managers holding several Manchester United attackers, the case for selling depends heavily on which players they own. Bruno Fernandes has lost a start, Matheus Cunha has become a substitute, and Bryan Mbeumo is still playing every league minute. Selling all three because United are in crisis could cost more than the repair is worth.

Bruno and Cunha are the more urgent decisions; Mbeumo is easier to keep while fixing problems elsewhere. Reducing a United-heavy midfield may make sense, but multiple hits require a stronger case than wanting every United player gone.

The manager remains; the selection question remains too

The managerial story has moved on. Sky Sports reported on 27 October at 14:53 UK time (UTC) that Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Chelsea and took Tuesday training. The report establishes Sky’s account of the managerial situation; it offers no certainty over Fernandes’ return to the side.

Do not build transfers around an assumed new-manager bounce. Equally, one unused-substitute appearance does not establish that Bruno is permanently excluded. Our Bruno-specific crisis analysis covers the earlier controversy; this guide is about rebuilding your squad around the uncertainty.

The official fixture feed gives United Chelsea away, Aston Villa home and Liverpool away in GW9–11. With that run ahead, there is little fixture-based pressure to retain a double-up while waiting for United to recover.

Three midfielders, three different risks

All three are FPL midfielders, including Cunha. Their attacking positions on the pitch do not make Cunha a direct forward-slot replacement.

Bruno is the budget-release decision. At £11.7m, a doubtful place in the XI ties up money that could improve another starter. His penalty-taking designation adds appeal when he plays, but owners first need clarity over his selection.

Cunha is the immediate starting-XI decision. His last two league appearances were six and 45 minutes, both from the bench. If you need dependable minutes this weekend and cannot cover him, that can make him your first sale even though Bruno costs more. Official Cunha match history.

Mbeumo is the most defensible temporary hold. Eight starts and 720 minutes distinguish him from the other two. For existing owners, those minutes give him a stronger claim on a place in the squad. Chelsea away still makes him a difficult new purchase.

How many United players should you keep?

One: If it is Mbeumo, another injured or non-playing starter may deserve your free transfer first. If it is Bruno or Cunha, compare the likely replacement with your actual bench option before deciding you must act.

Two: Aim to resolve the weaker slot rather than assume both must go. With Bruno plus Mbeumo, a Bruno sale can release budget while preserving a regular starter. With Cunha plus Mbeumo, Cunha's reduced minutes are the clearer issue. With Bruno plus Cunha, prioritise the move that improves your XI most after checking late selection news.

Three: A staged exit is usually more coherent than a blanket clear-out. One or two free transfers can reduce the concentration without an automatic points penalty. Mbeumo’s minutes make him the most reasonable player to retain during that process.

Open My Team and review the whole squad: available starters, formation, bench cover and other urgent problems. A United transfer that leaves an injured player elsewhere in your XI may solve the wrong problem. Use the GW9 injury update to compare those availability concerns before choosing your first move.

Bench, free transfer or minus four?

Bench: Sensible when you already have a credible alternative and want the next team-news update. Remember that a short substitute appearance can block an automatic substitution if you leave the United player in your starting XI.

Free transfer: Preferable when the incoming player improves your expected minutes or fixture run without creating another weakness. Spending a free transfer still has an opportunity cost: you cannot use that same move elsewhere.

Minus four: Judge the extra move separately. The replacement needs to improve your expected score by more than four points over the period you would otherwise hold, compared with your realistic no-transfer team—not automatically compared with zero. A playable substitute raises that hurdle.

Use the transfer-hit calculator to test your assumptions. The result is only as useful as the minutes and points assumptions you enter, so test a cautious scenario as well as the one you hope will happen.

Where could the money go?

Marcus Tavernier (£6.4m) and Rayan (£6.3m) offer lower-cost midfield routes rather than another expensive bet. Both have started all eight league games; Bournemouth next face Leeds at home, Ipswich away and Nottingham Forest at home. Both returned ten points in GW8; their starting records and upcoming fixtures are the more useful basis for assessing a transfer. Check fitness and role before choosing between them.

Before planning a second upgrade, use the selling-price calculator: your cash received may differ from the displayed market price. Then inspect the price-change tracker for budget pressure, without treating a possible price move as more important than selection news.

The sensible exit is the one that leaves you with a stronger XI on Saturday and fewer problems afterwards. Start with the least reliable minutes, consider what Bruno’s budget could fund, and keep Mbeumo if another position needs attention first. A complete clear-out can wait unless each extra transfer earns its points cost.
